March 2025 redevelopment project update

31 March 2025

The redevelopment project is entering the final weeks of building works and the whole museum team is looking forward to exploring these new spaces with an unobstructed view!

In the Town Cellars, the new oak floor has been laid, and the space is mostly (!) clear of building materials, revealing just how stunning a setting this will be for our new Shipwreck! Gallery, housing artefacts from the Swash Bay Wreck and Mortar Wreck, our 10-metre long logboat and other historical collections (image left).

New LED lighting is highlighting the beauty of the stonework walls and timber roof. Our bespoke shop fit is underway, in the large, new retail space in the main museum building, Oakley’s Mill. This is also where our main visitor welcome will be, providing a warm and inviting welcome for all (image middle). We’ve also introduced new colour highlights to steel beams and walls.

In Scaplen's Court, the oak cladding is now on our bespoke entranceway which will also house our new museum cafe (image above right). The finishing touches are being added to the stairs in the courtyard (image below left) and the garden, which is also being transformed with the help of our volunteers.

The scaffolding has been taken down from the middle of Oakley's Mill where our signature art installation, Abeona, will span three floors of the museum (images bottom middle and bottom right).

This stunning centrepiece will also showcase the work of the local community, with creative workshops being held to inspire elements of the sculpture's design.
