Dennis Hill painting acquisition

Painting of Upton House viewed from the road, with trees and a hill in front of the building.

We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of a new painting by the late Dennis Hill, a beloved local artist and member of Poole and East Dorset Art Society and Broadstone Art Society. Dennis continued painting into his 90's, and sadly passed away last year at the age of 99.

Our museum already houses several of his pieces, including the atmospheric view of Hamworthy Power Station, High Tide at Sterte, which will be featured in the new Harbour Life gallery.

Thanks to the generosity of the Poole Museum Society, we were able to acquire another of Hill's works from Broadstone Art Society’s annual charity auction in aid of Diverse Abilities.

Kenneth from Poole Museum Society answered some questions about the painting, discussing painting techniques and how the artwork will compliment the museum's collection:

Why did Poole Museum Society decide to buy this painting for the museum?

Poole Museum Society has, since its formation in 1973, had a fund for the purchase of objects for Poole Museum. It's one of the tangible ways that our members can make a contribution to the work of the museum.

We were approached by their Collections Officer, Joe, who asked us if we would be able to buy the painting of Upton House for the museum's collection, which of course the society was happy to do.

How were the funds raised?

The funds for the purchase of the painting came from the Margaret England bequest. Margaret England was for many years a great supporter of the society and Poole Museum. It was felt that the purchase of the painting would be a suitable use of money from this bequest.

What do you love about the painting?

It's a local picture showing the south side of Upton house, seen from the road. It is very well painted and shows just how good an artist Dennis Hill was, as he has used light and shade to draw the viewers eye up the path to the house.

Are there any interesting stories related to the artist or the painting?

Dennis Hill, who died in 2024, was for many years a member of Broadstone Art Club. He continued painting well into his 90's and was always happy to give advice. His work can be seen in the collections of British Petroleum, Dorset County Council and the Ordnance Survey.
