A fully accessible museum

An artists interpretation of the new Shipwreck! Gallery in Wool Hall which has been opened up and now has level access for everyone to explore.

Over the years, Poole Museum has outgrown facilities that are too small and inaccessible, restricting public access to both the collections and the remarkable heritage of the buildings, and part of this redevelopment project is about creating a museum that meets the needs of a diverse, modern audience and provides a space where everyone can feel welcome.

Accessibility and inclusion are fundamental to this project. The external work taking place aims to improve accessibility from the public realm to the museum’s entrance and includes installing new and accessible seating, access ramps, and improving accessibility between Poole Museum and Scaplen’s Court.

We’re also improving accessibility inside, providing level access throughout the ground floor, as well as installing two new, fully accessible lifts – one in the main museum building and one in Scaplen’s Court, to allow all visitors to access the upper floors in this medieval merchant’s house for the very first time.

Guided by inclusive design principles, and working alongside access consultants, our approach ensures the museum will be welcoming, barrier-free, and adaptable to a wide range of needs. Staff and volunteers will undergo inclusion training, while resources co-created with local communities – such as sensory-friendly guides and multi-sensory interpretation – will make the museum relevant and accessible to everyone, including underserved groups and families with SEND children.

We want to position Poole Museum as an outstanding museum, gallery and cultural centre offering opportunities for learning and connection while ensuring everyone can explore and engage with our collections equally and independently. By embedding accessibility into every aspect of the redevelopment, we are creating a space that belongs to all members of our community as well as all visitors, and supports a broader, more inclusive audience.
