Alfie is six months into a three year Site Carpenter Apprenticeship with Greendale Construction Limited, who are the main contractors for the redevelopment the museum is currently going through.
Find out why he decided to apply for an apprenticeship, why he loves working on the redevelopment of Poole Museum, and what he's looking forward to in three years time.
Why did you apply for this apprenticeship with Greendale?
I felt that doing an apprenticeship was the best thing to do. Carpentry was the only trade that caught my eye as I enjoy working with my hands.
What do you like about working for Greendale and Poole Museum?
I like the fact that everyone is respectful and very helpful. Being at Poole Museum is a great place to work and learn as it is such an interesting place especially working on the old parts of the building and learning how things were built all those years ago.
What's your favourite job so far?
I love every aspect of my job. I particularly like working on the older heritage works.
How do you balance your work with the college course?
I enjoy being on site more than being at college. I like the hands on side of my job. I like getting involved and being helpful where I can be.
What would you say to anyone who was thinking of giving apprenticeships a go?
I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship, it’s a better way to go. You learn skills whilst you are on the job. You earn a wage whilst you are learning. I am currently 16 and by the time I am 19 I will be a qualified carpenter. Whilst you are an apprentice you work alongside experienced tradesman and they really do help you to learn your trade.
